Does Charlize Theron still look tweaked, or was it just an optical illusion?

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 08:35 AM PST

As promised, here's Charlize Theron's W Magazine cover – she and Brad Pitt have alternate covers for the February "Movie Issue". If I'm choosing between which cover I like more – my pick is Brad's. At least Brad's is an interesting image, stylistically, which we haven't seen from him in a while. Charlize is always like this – hyper-styled, overly made up, in a gown, looking haughty. It's boring.

Charlize is in an interesting place right now, I think. She took some time off, she got out of a long-term relationship with Stuart Townsend, she maybe got some stuff tweaked on her face (more on that in a minute), and it seems like she really, really wants to be included in the Best Actress nominations this year for Young Adult. As such, Charlize is trying to be a bit more relatable, and little less haughty. Thus, this charming W Magazine interview:

Lynn Hirschberg: In Young Adult, you play Mavis Gary, who is stunning on the outside and a mess on the inside. Returning to the small town in Minnesota where she reigned as the beauty/bitch of her high school, Mavis sets out to reclaim her ex-boyfriend, now married. She is self-involved, delusional, and generally hard to like, which is rare for a female protagonist in a comedy. Do you have to like a character to play her?
Charlize Theron: I liked Mavis, but no, I don't think I need to like my characters. I do think empathy is very important. It's crucial to understand circumstance and story to grasp the role in a truthful manner. Your characters are like your children: Sometimes they make you proud, and other times, you think, Oh, really?! In Young Adult, I wanted to show some cringe-worthy moments that only women will get.

Like the "cutlets." Mavis wears flesh-colored glue-on gel-filled "breasts" over her real ones.
I wear those! If you don't have boobs, you wear those cutlets. I heard a story of a girl who was on a date, started making out, and thought, Oh, he's going to touch the cutlets! So she went to the bathroom to take them off, but her purse was too small to put them in there. I always thought that was a funny image, a woman not knowing what to do with these things that you stick onto your boobs. It's just the most bizarre, unsexy thing there is—so I added that to Mavis.

Growing up in South Africa, were you always tall and blonde and beautiful?
For the first eight years of my life, I didn't have front teeth. I was pretty sick as an infant, and antibiotics rotted them. But then I started to take dance classes, and I eventually got some teeth [laughs]. When I was 16, I went to Milan to model.

Did you dream of being an actress?
I wanted to be a ballerina, but I was too tall, and I had too many injuries. What I loved as a ballerina was telling stories, and I could also do that with acting, so I eventually moved to L.A.

You had a star-is-born moment as a result of your first role. For 2 Days in the Valley, you were on a billboard over Sunset Boulevard for a very long time. What was the audition for that movie like?
I remember I was in a catsuit. I'd never auditioned before, and I almost brought a bottle of ketchup and squirted it all over myself for the scene where I got shot. I looked like a maniac. It was a dying scene, so I barged through the door and started crawling on the floor. I think they were too scared not to give me the role.

[From W Magazine]

For a week, I'd like to know what it was like to be in need of cutlets. I've been stacked like a brick sh-thouse since sixth grade. I just imagine that it would be really fun to try on all kinds of different blouses and tops when you have small boobs. The world is run by the small-breasted, and I've always been curious about those cutlets.

Anyway, Charlize was all over the place this weekend, likely campaigning for a Golden Globe (and Oscar nomination), and probably partying her ass off too. I'm including photos of Charlize at the W Magazine event Friday night (she's wearing black Alexander McQueen) and the BAFTA LA event last night (in yellow Stella McCartney). She looks really pretty and soft in the McQueen – she usually doesn't wear her hair down on red carpets, and it's a nice length now. The Stella dress is fug, though. I don't get the waist ruffle. As for Charlize's alleged tweaking – in some angles, I really see it around her mouth, but straight-on, she looks fine.

Angelina Jolie wears black suit for “Foreign Language Film” nominees event: lovely?

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 07:59 AM PST

I always love seeing Angelina Jolie in a suit. These are photos from the American Cinematheque’s 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards Foreign-Language Nominee Event, in which Angelina joined her fellow Golden Globe-nominated directors for some photo ops, interviews, and… lunch, maybe? She posed with Aida Takla O’Reilly (the shorter, older dude), who is president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and with Pedro Almodovar, who is nominated for The Skin I Live In. She also posed with all of her fellow "Best Foreign Language" nominees/directors.

According to Just Jared, Angelina's ensemble was a mix of a Michael Kors dress and a Tom Ford jacket. She wore Michael Kors last week too – Kors designed that coat she wore in Washington, D.C. Maybe she'll be wearing Kors at the Globes tonight? Hmm… that would be interesting. Anyway, I do like it when Angelina wears suits and looks like a professional. I think her business style – pencil skirts, cashmere, well-tailored suits – is much better than her red carpet style.

Any thoughts as to whether Angelina and/or Brad will actually win a Golden Globe tonight? If it's between the two of them, I'm hoping Brad wins Best Actor. I will be sick to my stomach if Clooney walks away with it, anointed as the frontrunner in this Best Actor race. Meanwhile, I think Angelina should be proud of her Foreign Language nomination, but there are probably more worthy winners. The Hollywood Foreign Press loves Almodovar, right? Also – both Angelina and Brad are going to be presenting tonight, so they're both guaranteed some time on the stage. Moneyball is up for Best Picture, Drama, and how cute would it be if Angelina introduced the clip?

Demi Moore comes out of hiding: did she get some post-split tweaking?

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 07:04 AM PST

These are photos of Demi Moore and her daughter Rumer at a charity event benefiting J/P Haitian Relief last night. Let's get the superficial stuff out of the way first – okay, Rumer looks good! I still hate this hair color on her, but compared to her mom, Rumer looks fresh, young and sober. Demi looks… well, she's gained a little weight back since the last time we had photos of her. She doesn't look like a stiff wind will topple her. But she's gotten some post-split tweaking, and that's sad. Her face looks like a mask.

Anyway, several media outlets are buzzing about a run-in Demi had with Ashton Kutcher. Every year, the agency CAA throws a huge bash before the Golden Globes, and both Demi and Ashton were in attendance. Us Weekly said their run-in was "awkward" but they did speak to each other:

If Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are trying to avoid one another after announcing their split last November, they need to try harder!

The exes had another awkward run-in on Friday night at a star-studded CAA Foundation pre-Golden Globes bash at SoHo House in West Hollywood.

Kutcher, 33, ran into Moore, 49, at the private party, multiple sources confirm to Us Weekly. But the former couple kept it brief, one insider says. “I saw him briefly say hi to her, but that was it. They spent most of the evening keeping a distance.”

Although still noticeably “skinny,” Margin Call star Moore “looked amazing,” another source added. The former couple (whose sixth wedding anniversary in September was marred by Kutcher’s fling with Sara Leal, 22, at a San Diego hotel) had plenty of VIP pals to distract them from one another. Other A-list attendees at the soiree included Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio, P Diddy, Bradley Cooper (smoking an electronic cigarette), Kate Hudson (chatting with Robert Downey, Jr.) and Bill Maher.

Moore’s pal for much of the night? Her longtime buddy and fellow Kabbalah enthusiast Madonna, whose ex-husband Sean Penn was also spotted at the bash.

Kutcher gabbed with Liz Merriwether, creator of FOX smash New Girl. He showed off a new look — a clean-shaven face and a closer-cropped haircut at a TCA panel for Two and a Half Men on Wednesday.

[From Us Weekly]

Page Six's version is a bit more detailed – read the full story here. They claim that Ashton was the one to approach Demi, and he came over to her while she was sitting with Madonna and Sean Penn – to be a fly on that wall, eh? A source tells Page Six, "Within five minutes of them seeing each other, Ashton did come over. It was a crowded room so he made his way over. Demi and Ashton, and Madonna and Sean, were talking and hanging out. Ashton and Demi didn't arrive together, or spend the whole night together, but it was 100 percent normal. There wasn't an issue." After they spoke, Demi and Ashton spent the rest of the night apart. Page Six also says that Cameron Diaz and P. Diddy were there, and they were "really cozy" together on a couch. Also, P. Diddy threw a "tantrum" directed at the bartenders because they wouldn't serve him Ciroc vodka (the event was sponsored by Grey Goose).

Brad Pitt goes old-school heartthrob on the cover of W Mag: hot or not?

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 06:43 AM PST

Brad Pitt covers the February issue of W Magazine – their annual "Movie Issue". Charlize Theron got a separate cover, which we will cover at a separate time. Let's just talk about Brad right now. Thoughts on his styling? I usually like Brad when he's a bit more cleaned up, and I don't really understand why he's been growing out his hair since completing World War Z's interminable shoot. Maybe it's just laziness. Or maybe he just wants ONE member of "Brangelina" to have beautiful hair for the awards season. I don't know. I think he's a bit too old to be doing the long-haired stoner thing, though. Even though the cover doesn't do much for me, there's a closeup shot that I've included below… Brad in closeup is hot. He looks like he's about to kiss someone. Anyway, here's Brad's interview in W – this is the complete thing:

Lynn Hirschberg: Which movie has made you cry?
Brad Pitt: I'm not much of a crier at films, but there was one…I was coming back from Cabo on my way to Montreal, and I got hit with Montezuma's revenge. I could not keep anything down. I was stuck in a hotel room with no windows and was just doing what you do when you're sick. On day two of this extremely painful episode, I watched a film called Life as a House. Kevin Kline is an architect and learns he has terminal cancer. He's estranged from his teenage son and decides they're going to finish this house. I don't know if it would still hit me the same way, but on my 27th hour of pure wretchedness, this movie just crushed me. I should watch it again to see if it has the same effect.

Have your parents seen you die in a movie?
They would have had to. I die really well, by the way. It's one of my strong points. I just take a bullet well.

Do you have trouble watching yourself die?
God, no. I'm just checking the boxes. Hit that. Missed that. Hit that moment. Missed that one. God, I'd like to do that one again.

Do you really have characters that you'd like to do over?
Um…the first 12 years of my career, I would think.

No!
Okay…first 11 years.

What was the first role you auditioned for?
My agent sent me out for two films: One of them was The Accused with Jodie Foster. I was so excited.

Did you go out for the part of the rapist?
Probably not. With this face, I was probably up for the guy with the conscience. I called up afterward and asked, "How did I do?" There were three seconds of silence and then: "Have you ever thought about acting classes?"

[From W Magazine]

W Magazine released the video interview too, which is pretty much the same stuff that the online interview has. Brad seems a bit full of himself, but in his defense, I think that's just his sense of humor. Plus, he's been really, insanely famous for more than two decades – good enough reason to be full of himself.

Jessica Biel in Oscar de la Renta, without an engagement ring: gorgeous or meh?

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 06:18 AM PST

Here are some new photos of Jessica Biel at a W Magazine event on Friday. It was a star-studded event, with Charlize Theron, Emma Stone and Benedict Cumberbatch also in attendance. Jessica was kind of the "star" of the event, though. Isn't that weird? It was her first public appearance since every media outlet claimed that she and Justin Timberlake had gotten engaged over the holidays. For the occasion, Biel chose this absolutely gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown – this dress hugs her every curve, and I should just say… I have issues with Jessica Biel as a person, as an actress, and as a celebrity but dear God – her body is really hot. Such a great body… such a bland girl. Anyway, as you can imagine, Jessica was flying solo to the event, but she managed to be the talk of all of the outlets because she didn't choose this occasion to flash her allegedly new engagement ring. Where's the ring, Biel?

The future Mrs. Justin Timberlake is bringing sexy back — and then some! Hitting Friday’s W Magazine Golden Globes bash at the famed Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood — her first red carpet appearance since her top-secret engagement to Timberlake — Jessica Biel proved once and for all why she’s a keeper.

The stunning New Year’s Eve actress, 29, provoked mass chaos on the red carpet in a skin-tight gold dress by Oscar de la Renta, her hair still a dark shade of brown. (The ultra-private actress declined to wear her engagement ring at the party.) Also turning heads at the bash? Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Chastain, Kirsten Dunst, Charlize Theron, Miranda Kerr and hubby Orlando Bloom, Rachel Zoe, Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer, Liev Schreiber, Camilla Alves (but no Matthew McConnaughey)…and Lindsay Lohan.

With her hubby-to-be Timberlake, 31, nowhere to be found, Biel was sweet and gracious — but nervous — greeting photographers, pals and well-wishers on the red carpet. The star introduced herself to folks as “Jessie,” not Jessica, and gabbed with one pal about her planned dress for Sunday’s Golden Globe awards, even showing pics on her cell phone of the frock.

Biel (who accepted Timberlake’s proposal during a romantic ski vacation in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in late December) even proved to be a good sport — opting to climb six flights of stairs to Chateau’s penthouse after the elevator traffic got backed up.

For his part, Timberlake (with a new full beard) made his first post-engagement appearance last week at CES in Las Vegas for a MySpace TV presentation. The singer-actor has “never been happier” with Biel, an insider told Us Weekly. “He knew it was the right time to propose.”

[From Us Weekly]

Justin and "Jessie" (??) are such a strange couple. I suspect that Jessie just did this for more attention – drawing out the time frame in which we'll actually be interested in seeing her ring. Because that's all she's got going? Maybe. I hate that people are telling her that all she's got to offer is being "Mrs. Timberlake" though. Because I don't even think she's got that – I really doubt Justin will ever marry her. Who knows, though. This couple makes no sense.

I'm also including some photos of Emma Stone at this same event, just because she looked like total ass. I'm sure she's stoned, but this Lanvin dress and the makeup is doing her no favors. It's a bad day when Emma falls so far and Jessica Biel looks so amazing at the same event.

Michael Fassbender wins Best Actor at the LAFCA: hot & shiny?

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 05:29 AM PST

Dear God, ARE HIS PANTS UNBUTTONED?!?!?! (Update: No, they're not. But aren't you glad I made you look?)

These are new photos of Michael Fassbender at the LA Film Critics Awards on Friday, where Fassy took the award for Best Actor for his multiple film roles this year. Michael always (ALWAYS) looks like he's just come from unleashing his beast on some poor (and lucky) woman. I don't know if he cares about dressing like, say, Brad Pitt. I've noticed that some of suits could use some tailoring, and his fabric and color choices are sometimes odd. Take this suit, for instance. It's rather shiny, right? It makes me think of leather, although I'm sure it's just some kind of treated fabric. It also looks… I don't know. "Off" I guess. Still, I don't love Fassy because of his style or lack thereof. I love him for his talent, for his ginger, for his humor, for his BEAST. Here's a little interview he did on the red carpet:

Irish actor Michael Fassbender snagged best actor for his work in four films this awards season: A Dangerous Method, Jane Eyre, Shame, and X-Men First Class. But it is Shame, which explores the disintegrating life of a sex addict, that has critics and audiences alike talking. He is up for a Golden Globe this weekend.

Fassbender said he did not find it difficult to switch between parts in rapid succession in the films he completed months ago.

“Now is a different time for me. My work is really eight months ago on Shame, Dangerous Method, whatever that was — 15 months ago. So, you know, I really concentrate very intensely at the time on what I’m doing. And so I wash away one from the next.

“I don’t preference. I just sort of do the best that I can to tell the story. So I keep it that simple. So, when it comes out now, it’s like, well, I don’t know, there’s not a lot for me to really say, or do. Because it’s like it’s open. The public really sees it and they take what they want from it.”

[From The Telegraph]

And here's the video from the same outlet, on the LAFCA red carpet. His mouth looks moist. Like he's just come from devouring his latest sweetshop. *inadvertently moans* He's so much better in motion, and when you can hear the accent. Prepare yourselves – Fassy will be unleashing his beast at the Golden Globes tonight as well. *happy sigh*
