The Sweet Valley High Movie Will Be A Musical

Posted: 14 Jan 2012 10:10 AM PST

There are so many reasons to get excited for the upcoming movie adaptation of the Sweet Valley High books. Besides the fact Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, the main characters in the series will finally get their time on the silver screen Diablo Cody, who wrote Juno and Young Adult will be the one transforming the twin’s lives into a film. And now Diablo has revealed Sweet Valley High won’t just be a movie, it will be a movie musical.

The songs for the film are being written by real Broadway veterans, specifically Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, who wrote the songs for Next to Normal, a musical about mental illness that won the Tony for best original score.

Diablo is pretty confident fans won’t be disappointed by the final project saying, “…I’m very excited about ‘Sweet Valley High.’ It’s going to blow people’s minds.”

Now if they could just start working on a Babysitter’s Club musical all would be right with the world.

This Is The Best Hunger Games Parody Trailer We’ve Seen

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 03:20 PM PST

Since the Hunger Games trailer first debuted a few months ago, fans have posted reenactments and parodies to YouTube. However, none of them have stood out like this one by Evil Iguana Productions—and it turns out it’s been online for a month! We’re glad we stumbled upon it thanks to The Mary Sue, because this shit is hilarious.

What makes an especially nuanced spoof is one that plays off the actual details from the original work. Evil Iguana Productions have obviously read the books and watched the trailer over and over, because they recreate the settings on a small budget but don’t skimp on Effie’s costume and the Arena chase scenes. These were my favorite parts:

  • Gale’s “research” walking Man vs. Wild
  • Katniss and Gale doing the “you throw, I shoot” bit with the bird and the arrow… because that was a random part of the actual trailer
  • Katniss taking bets on how Prim will die
  • Peeta bitching about how the odds are stacked against him
  • The Katniss girl’s spot-on imitation of Jennifer Lawrence
  • President Snow’s monologue
  • The guy who recreated Seneca Crane’s manicured beard!
  • Peeta practicing his camouflage skills

Crushable Quotable: Matt Bomer Felt ‘Naked’ After Getting Waxed For Magic Mike

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 02:54 PM PST

Part of the reason this quote from Matt Bomer is so ironic is that the movie he got partially waxed for is Magic Mike, the inspiring tale of friendship between two male strippers. And as you can see from these new stills, Matt and his co-stars Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer had to spend a lot of time in their skivvies.

But what the White Collar star meant, as he told EW, was that even when he was fully dressed he felt “prepubescent” walking around in jeans:

I had never been waxed before. I did have to get partially waxed. I'm not a very hairy individual to begin with, but it was painful. But more than that, the pain didn't bother me so much, it was more the feeling of feeling kind of prepubescent again, walking around with no hair on your legs, in jeans, feeling kind of naked all the time, that was odd.

But what has him slightly apprehensive is what the waxing was a prelude to: His dancing scenes, and whatever other wackiness occurs in the film. (Really, it’s the tale of friendship between male strippers; you can bet it’s gonna be cheesy as hell.) He’s curious to see what it’s like when he returns to the White Collar set with co-star Tim DeKay:

I know Tim is going to tease me about a few moments in the film. I'm looking forward to seeing just what I get teased about the most.

Magic Mike is set to come out June 29; for the time being, here’s a bonus photo of Matthew McConaughey as the dancer-turned-club-owner:

This movie looks amazing.

Gallery: How Dolly Parton Has And Hasn’t Aged Since Nine To Five

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 02:21 PM PST

Dolly Parton is 66 this month, but you wouldn’t know it from looking at her! …Actually, it’s pretty clear thanks to Dolly’s many plastic surgeries since she first became famous in the music and movie worlds back in 1980. Dolly’s happy to share insight on her many nips and tucks; she’s known for laughing, “If it's a-sagging, a-bagging or a-dragging, I go get it fixed! I get it sucked, plucked, and tucked!”

Dolly stars opposite Queen Latifah in the new gospel movie Joyful Noise, so it’s clear that she’s not slowing down anytime soon. But we were curious—seeing as we’ve only known her as the slightly plastic, collagen-stuffed, platinum-blonde star, what was she like back in her first film Nine to Five?

¡Rob! Not As Racist As We Thought It Would Be, Still Kind Of Racist

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 01:32 PM PST

CBS’ new Rob Schneider vehicle ¡Rob! premiered last night, and while it was not as cringe-worthy as I expected it to be, it was still fairly cringe-worthy. And not just in the “broad physical comedy, everything goes wrong” way you expect a Rob Schneider vehicle to be.

The sitcom follows the exploits of the title character as he tries to make nice with the extended family of his improbably hot new Mexican-American wife Maggie. From the first time Rob meets them, much of the comedy comes from stereotypes white people in America hold about Mexicans and Latinos in general. The show generally puts these stereotypes in the mouth of Rob, mocking him for being so foolish. This could be read as a satire on people who hold racist or ignorant views (“I feel like I’m at a Julio Iglesias concert,” he says on meeting Maggie’s family…I gasped), but this is undermined by the fact that it also contains a good deal of racial stereotyping outside of Rob’s character.

First, there’s Maggie’s shiftless cousin Hector, who proudly proclaims his intentions to become an illegal immigrant. Then there are the stereotypically strict Mexican parents, played by Cheech Marin and Diana Maria Riva. Then there’s the non-English-speaking grandmother with a shrine to the Catholic saints in her room. That’s right, they gave Lupe Ontiveros a non-speaking role.

I’m not saying there are zero differences between Mexican and white bread American culture, but must we really make these differences the focal point of yet another sitcom? It brings nothing new to the table to repeat the few tropes of Mexican culture that Americans already have ingrained in their minds. The strongest parts of the show come when we see glimmers of individuality in the characters outside of the culture they belong to, like when Maggie’s dad gets sarcastic with Rob over his efforts to show his knowledge of Mexican stuff (“enjoy the guacamole that you so impressively identified”), or conversely, when he feels a kinship with Rob over being “an old, short guy.” I also want to know more about the weird TV shows he watches (“a show where they make Hoarders live in a house together” sounds impressively terrible). I feel like Hector could also have the potential to be a unique and loopy character beyond his mere penchant for American jobs. Is Hector gay? Does he love trivia nights? Is he addicted to popping bubble wrap? Let’s hope Rob‘s producers see fit to develop these glimmers into something worth watching as the season progresses.

Olivia Munn Poses Naked For PETA Ad

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 01:10 PM PST

The Daily Show correspondent and sexy geek girl Olivia Munn is the latest celebrity to pose naked for PETA‘s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign, with the billboard being unveiled in Los Angeles yesterday. She joins celebs like Khloe Kardashian and Elisabetta Canalis in baring it all for cute fluffy animals… like the little bunny Photoshopped into the ad with her.

“As a proud person of Chinese descent, it broke my heart to learn just how terribly animals suffer and die on Chinese fur farms and that there are no penalties for this abuse,” she’s said in PETA videos. “When you think about even that little tiny trim of fur on your gloves or on your collar, that is still coming from an animal that had to endure so much pain just for you. There’s nothing good about pretending like you don’t know.”

And here’s Olivia at the unveiling:
